The entry rung

A room built around its shade, not its view

Forty-two square metres facing north-west, with a single sliding leaf of 3.2 m opening onto a loggia that the roof covers end to end.

The Dune Rooms sit on the inland side of the pavilions, where the umbrella pines stand closest — 8 to 14 m from the parapet. That position is the whole point of the type. The terrace is in shade across the entire middle of the day, and at two in the afternoon in July it measures three to four degrees cooler than the open dune a hundred metres away. The pines also carry the sound: on a windy afternoon the canopy is louder than the surf on the other side of the ridge.

What this rung does not have is a sea view, and the plan does not pretend otherwise. The band of Atlantic begins at the Atlantic Suite, 400 m and two rungs further out. A Dune Room gives you trees, a sand path, cistus and rosemary at the terrace edge, and a room that stays dark and cool when the light outside is at its hardest.

There are 40 of them, which makes this the type you are most likely to be offered. Twelve pairs connect through a lobby door, so two of them become a family arrangement of 84 m² with 28 m² of terrace. Two are among the estate's four keys specified for step-free use.

Interior 42 m² to the inside face of the plaster. Loggia 14 m² to the outside face of the parapet. The two figures are never added together on this site without saying so.

  1. 1

    Entry and dressing, 4.4 m²

A walnut bench 1.4 m long, an open hanging rail of 1.1 m, and the safe at 420 × 350 × 300 mm. The door into the room is offset, so the bed is not visible from the path.

  2. 2

    Sleeping and sitting, 30.2 m²

One bed of 200 × 200 cm on a walnut platform standing 220 mm off the floor, a linen armchair and a reading lamp at the glazing, and a travertine desk 1.6 m long under the slot window.

  3. 3

    Bathroom, 7.4 m²

One room. A travertine basin on a walnut console, a level-access shower of 1 500 × 800 mm with a 300 mm rain head and a hand shower, a WC, and aged bronze throughout.

  4. 4

    The sliding wall, 3.2 × 2.6 m

A single leaf that slides into a pocket in the wall, so the opening is clear across its whole width. The screen slides from the same pocket.

  5. 5

    Loggia, 14 m², 3.2 m deep

Covered across its entire depth by the pavilion roof, which oversails by 3.2 m here. A walnut daybed, two chairs and a bronze side table. The parapet stands at 900 mm.

  6. 6

    The pines

The nearest trunk is 8 m from the parapet, the furthest in the view 14 m. None was removed to build the pavilion; the plan was drawn around the ones that were already there.

A sand path through a stand of umbrella pines, dappled light on the ground, cistus and rosemary at the edges and a low lime-washed wall curving away.

Four points in the day

What the room is actually like

At six in the morning the room is still dark, because north-west glazing gets no sunrise. What it gets instead is the light off the sand path, which comes up cold and even, and the pines moving before the wind reaches the ground. This is the hour the type is best at.

At two in the afternoon the loggia is in full shade and the room behind it is cooler than the corridor outside. The slats above the terrace are pitched at 22°, which at this latitude turns away a midday sun standing 75° up in June and lets a 28° winter sun straight through in December. On the hottest week of the year this is where people read.

At six in the evening the terrace finally gets direct sun. From late May to early August it arrives at about 17:40 and stays until the sun goes down behind the ridge at around 21:10. Between early November and the middle of February it does not arrive at all, because the sun sets too far south to reach a north-west wall — which is worth knowing before you choose a winter date.

At eleven at night the only lights are at floor level, the louvre blind is down and the glazing is open 300 mm at the top. On a still night you can hear the surf through the ridge. On a windy one you hear the canopy instead, and most people prefer it.
